VMFA on the Road

Tuesday, March 26, 2019

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' new state-of-the-art traveling museum and art studio comes to Suffolk. The main attraction of VMFA on the Road is the opportunity for residents of the Commonwealth to see and experience works of art from the VMFA collection up close. The inaugural exhibition, "How Far Can Creativity Take You: VMFA Fellowship Artists," celebrates the role VMFA has played in the lives of fellowship recipients. The exhibition will include works by the following acclaimed artists, who all have some connection to Virginia: Julien Binford, Nell Blain, Ann Chenoweth, Esther Worden Day, Steven Fishman, Emmet Gowin, Sally Mann, Arthur Sawyers, Charles Sibley, Cy Twombly, Benjamin Wigfall, and Dennis Winston.

Since 1940, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has awarded over 1,300 fellowship to artists across Virginia. The exhibition How Far Can Creativity Take You, asks this question by focusing on works made by 12 fellows who have achieved acclaim in the art world and are represented in the museum’s permanent collection. The artist’s journeys have not only been fueled by passion and hard work, but they have also each been made possible by the VMFA Fellowship Program. How Far Can Creativity Take You, illustrates the rich fusion between inspiration, creativity, and accessibility that the VMFA brings you.

In addition to the VMFA on the Road tour (approx. 25 minutes), students will take part in a hands-on activity (approximately 25 minutes) under the pavilion behind the Tourism office. This activity will also explore creativity.
