DESCRIPTION:Exhibit of ExcellenceThe purpose of this exhibit is to display the BEST artwork from Suffolk’s 9-12th grade students. The Exhibit of Excellence will recognize the talent of these students, encourage them, and promote them and their work.Eligible students: 9th – 12th-grade students who live or attend school in Suffolk for the ‘25-’26 School Year including Homeschool students. Students do not need to be enrolled in art classes to be eligible.Awards:Best in Show: $200/ given in honor of Dana AdamsFirst Place: $150Second Place: $100Third Place: $75Honorable Mention: $20/each\nJuror: John Tobin Jr. brings a wealth of artistic and educational experience to the Exhibit of Excellence. His formal education includes an AA Degree from Allan Hancock College (1970), a BFA Degree from Old Dominion University (1975), and an MA Degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Michigan State University (1992), underscoring a commitment to both practice and pedagogy. Mr. Tobin’s extensive career in education involved teaching for the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DODDS) in Germany and Japan for over two decades (1984–2006), and he also served as an Artist in Residence for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Commission for the Arts and Humanities. His artwork has been recognized with numerous accolades, including multiple “Best in Show” and First Place awards, and is featured in the permanent collections of the Chrysler Museum of Norfolk and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the latter commissioning a unique “Touchable Sculpture” for the visually impaired. A lifetime member of the Virginia Crafts Guild, his work has also been published in books such as “Making Ceramic Sculpture” and “Humor in Craft.” With a career dedicated to creating and teaching art globally, Mr. Tobin provides a seasoned and diverse perspective to this year’s exhibit.\nImportant dates:Work must be dropped off at the Suffolk Art Gallery118 Bosley Ave. Suffolk, VA 23434January 22-239 am- 5 pmWork not selected for the show must be picked upJanuary 309 am-5 pmOpening Reception Award Presentation:February 66:30 pmArtwork will be on display for the duration of the show and must be picked up by March 3, 2026\n
