In Plein Site is a must-see exhibit that embraces the spontaneity of plein air painting and ability of artists to capture the essence of downtown Suffolk on canvas. The works featured in this exhibit are the result of a day-long plein air painting adventure on Saturday, May 5, 2018, throughout Downtown Suffolk. The day of painting will culminate in a Crititique and Wet Paint Sale reception from 4:30-6:30pm at the Suffolk Center. The "People's Choice Award" will be presented at that time. This open show features works by current members of the Suffolk Art League. These artists work in a wide variety of art mediums and styles and represent most of the Hampton Roads area.
The Opening Reception is Tuesday, June 19, from 5:30-7:30pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

Suffolk Tourism is partnering with the Suffolk Public Library for a summertime "Storytime at the Station" series. This fun interactive storytelling program is geared toward children ages three to seven. Storytime will be conducted on the porch of Seaboard Station Railroad Museum beginning at 10:30am on Saturdays, June 23, July 21, and August 18. Blankets or beach towels for comfortable seating are welcome. Each month a different book will be read followed by a themed craft and the opportunity to explore the museum (children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). The featured book on June 23 will be Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton. Storytime at the Station is free and open to the public. Space is limited and reservations are encouraged.

Suffolk’s rich heritage dates back to the early 17th century, when Captain John Smith first encountered the Nansemond Indians on the Nansemond River. Even now, you can trace Suffolk’s legacy through our historic homes and neighborhoods, churches and Virginia Civil War Trails. Guided by a Suffolk historian, you meet the people and places that made Suffolk the city it is today. Highlights of this windshield tour include Cedar Hill Cemetery, Riddick’s Folly House Museum, Constant’s Wharf, College Court and Suffolk’s Historic Lakeside neighborhood.

An official Virginia Civil War Trail site, Cedar Hill Cemetery has long been an attraction for history buffs and even walking groups. The Suffolk Division of Tourism offers a guided stroll through the pleasant 32-acre cemetery, rich in history and natural beauty. The 90-minute daytime tour will offer unique insights into Suffolk’s heritage as tour goers traverse the cedar-lined terrain dotted with timeworn headstones. Reservations are required and cancellations are expected no less than 48 hours prior to scheduled tour. Call the Suffolk Visitor Center at 757.514.4130 to reserve your spot. Special rates are available for groups of 12 or more.

A hair-raising encounter with the spirited side of Suffolk. Follow a costumed guide through the shadows of historic Main Street discovering stories, legends and "unexplained occurrences" by lantern light. Tales of unsolved mysteries and unresolved affairs abound throughout Suffolk's historically hip Ghost Walk. Reservations required.
